A nine-volume set of Otto
An extraordinary publication documenting the history of the early 8-cylinder models, re-issued in the year celebrating the 308’s 50th anniversary.
Cavallino is proud to be re-issuing Otto—a rich and well-documented study providing 146 pages of essential reading for anyone interested in the characteristics, data, and history of the 308, 328, 348, and 355 series that used it.
The V8 engine was conceived to allow Ferrari to develop a second product line made up of smaller cars than those powered by the brand’s traditional V12s. Following the initial use of a V6 in the Dino—an excellent unit but ultimately considered underpowered for a Ferrari—the 3-liter V8 emerged as the ideal compromise between size, power, and production cost. The V8 made its debut in the 308 GT4 in 1974, before being adopted for the GTB. It then evolved from carburetors to fuel injection, before being equipped with 4 valves per cylinder. Subsequent upgraded versions were the 328 (3.2 liters), 348 (3.4 liters), and 355 (3.5 liters). For the Italian and Greek markets a “detuned” 2-liter version (208) was introduced, and later fitted with a turbocharger and then a turbo with intercooler.
Originally published as separate monographs in the early 2000s, this work is now available as a complete 9-volume set, issued in a limited print run.
